Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME generic extension is the sole TLD planned for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level names remained online.
