An email filter is a piece of software that is installed on a POP3/IMAP server and ‘scans’ all inbound emails to obstruct any unwelcome ones from entering a given mailbox. Spam filters typically examine the content of an email and if they detect particular keywords or other dubious content, they either delete the email or re-send it to the Junk/Spam folder instead of the Inbox folder.
